You may not look at a toy on the shelf at your local retailer as art, but it is. It was designed, concepted, and created through a delicate marriage of engineering and artistry. But what about the toys that get designed and concepted, but not created? Toys That Time Forgot is a book series that explores and celebrates “lost toy” projects from the 1980s through the 2000s, showcasing both the art that went into them and the stories behind them. Projects get canceled for a variety of reasons, but that doesn’t mean the effort put into these projects should be relegated to the trash bin. What did Hasbro have planned for Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal in the early 1980s? Why did Tiger pass on the Battletoads? And did Kenner almost green-light a project in the 1990s based on a sugary confection? Come hear some of the tales that appear in the recently-released Toys That Time Forgot Volume 2 and plans for Volume 3.
